Established in 2014, Lee Montessori PCS implements a highly structured, child-centered approach to education. Students receive individualized or small-group academic lessons in multi-age classrooms taught by highly trained instructors. Serving three primary classrooms (ages 3-6) and one lower elementary classroom (ages 6-9), Lee Montessori PCS provides students with the freedom to learn at their own pace, to act independently in the classroom, and to explore the world around them.

In their first two years of operations, Lee Montessori has distinguished itself by creating diverse, high-performing environments for all of its students. They have made significant progress in increasing the percentage of children from low-income families (from 15% in year one to 34% in year two) while maintaining strong academic and social-emotional outcomes. In their founding year, the school met or exceeded all performance expectations established by the PCSB's Performance Management Framework. And, while they are not yet eligible to receive a performance tier, they anticipate achieving Tier I status by the time they qualify.

Established in 1998, Chavez Schools Capitol Hill High School is a Tier 2 public charter high school located in Ward 6’s historic Capitol Hill neighborhood. The high school serves 365 students, 13% are Hispanic/Latino and 87% are African American. 43% of students are directly certified for free/reduced meals.

At the foundation of Chavez Schools’ success is the curriculum that emphasizes civic leadership and the academic and cognitive skills necessary for success in college and beyond. This is accomplished through quarterly performance tasks, advocacy projects and grade level public policy experiences.

Chavez Schools leverage the incredible wealth of public policy resources located in the nation’s capital to engage students as empowered citizens. In addition, Chavez requires scholars to go beyond being just consumers of current events, but engage in the creation of the policies and practices that will lend themselves to positive change in their communities and in the world.

Chavez’s Capitol Hill campus boasts a 100% college acceptance rate and has amassed over $288,000 in scholarship monies to date.

Established in 2001, Thurgood Marshall Academy (TMA) is a Tier 1 public charter high school located in Ward 8’s historic Anacostia neighborhood. TMA serves nearly 400 students; almost 100% are African-American and ~75% are low-income.

In addition to preparing students for college success, TMA focuses on instilling an understanding of democracy and the ability to advocate for themselves and others. To do so, it weaves elements of law and justice through all subject areas and provides enrichment opportunities that include tutoring and law-based programs at leading local law firms, mentoring, and community service projects. Through this unique focus, TMA aims for every student to develop his own voice and learn widely applicable skills—the ability to solve complex problems, to think critically, and to advocate persuasively.

Every member of TMA’s first nine graduating classes was accepted to a two or four-year college and received financial assistance; over 90% attend college within the first year of high school graduation, and 94% of alumni persist from freshman to sophomore year. Notably, TMA alumni are graduating from college at rates five times higher than their neighborhood peers.
